Environmental Science Challenge 2024-25
A new school year means time to think about a new Environmental Science Challenge for Schools.
Our theme this year is ‘River as habitat’. The state of all rivers, but the Thames in particular, has been in the forefront of our minds and the media. There has been a lot of emphasis on pollution affecting how we humans use the river.
However, rivers aren’t just human amenities but major habitats that support a mass of ecosystems. If we think of the Thames, it should be supporting life in the water, along its banks and the wetlands surrounding it. All of which in turn helps migratory birds like swifts and swallows, marsh plants and creatures that only feed on those particular plants for example.
How each school approaches this challenge is open for them to choose. We love the variety and ingenuity of all the work we receive. The submissions we have received in past years have used various curriculum subjects – not just science but combinations of maths, English, art, design and technology.
This year thinking about the ‘River as habitat’ could involve history or geography, or possibly philosophical questions about what a river actually is and should it be given its own status as some important features around the world have been granted?
We are hoping as many of our local schools will use this challenge as a chance to educate in a purposeful and enjoyable way. We are very fortunate once again that we have been given the opportunity to exhibit the work submitted in the River and Rowing Museum this year. Perhaps we will see you there in the summer admiring the terrific work our young people do?
