Why Your Voice Matters: Calling on Henley Organisations to Adopt a “Pledge for the Planet”

You don’t need to be perfect to make a difference — small, practical steps can have a positive impact, particularly if you talk about it.  And one of the most powerful things your organisation can do to help us move towards a safer, cleaner, greener Henley is:

Adopt a pledge — and use your voice to speak up about it.

That’s what our Pledge for the Planet is all about: inviting local businesses, schools, sports clubs, churches and community organisations to adopt one (or more) simple climate or nature pledges that reflect their organisation and their values — and then encourage your customers, suppliers, employees or members to take that pledge, or another one that suits them.

Each pledge shows how many others have signed up to that pledge – because while it is easy to feel that individual efforts don’t matter, together we create momentum that’s impossible for decision-makers to ignore and powerful enough to influence real change.

Greener Henley’s goal is engage 5,000 people locally in meaningful action for nature and climate by 2028.  This isn’t just a number — it represents around 25% of our local population in and around Henley, the critical threshold that research shows can trigger a social tipping point. At that level of engagement, lasting, systemic change becomes not just possible, but much more likely.

Using your voice as a business or organisation is one of the most powerful things that you can do to make a difference within your sphere of influence, in relation to the climate and nature emergency.  When you adopt a Pledge for the Planet and encourage your community to do the same, you’re helping make change happen — not just through scaling up action, but by shifting the conversation.

Pick a pledge that fits your organisation

You can choose the Pledge for the Planet that works best for your organisation, aligns with your values and fits your day-to-day reality. 

Whether you choose a Pledge for the Planet focused on travel, nature, the river or another from one of our 9 categories, adopting a pledge means showing your community that you care — and encouraging others to act too.

For example:

  • A sports club might adopt our ‘Walk It, Bike It’ pledge and encourage members to walk or cycle to training.
  • A river-based organisation might adopt our “Use Eco-friendy products” pledge to prevent harmful chemicals finding their way into our river, and encourage their members to do the same in their homes.
  • A business could adopt the “Get energy savvy” pledge by booking a free energy assessment and encouraging their suppliers to do the same in their businesses.
  • A school might adopt a “Get wildlife friendly” pledge and get students involved in planting wildflowers at school and at home in their gardens and outside spaces.
