Henley: a small town leading big change
Most people in Henley want to do something positive for climate and nature. People care and want to do the right thing for their children and the planet – they just aren’t always sure what makes a difference. It’s that uncertainty – not apathy – that holds action back. We also often don’t see how our individual actions can make a difference in the face of such an overwhelming problem.
But once we ask people and organisations to take one clear, practical step that fits into real life, they usually take it. And crucially, when this one step sits alongside actions taken by others in our community, the numbers start to add up, inspiring more and more people to take part.
And that’s exactly what’s starting to happen here in Henley with our Pledge for the Planet initiative.
Across the town, residents, schools, businesses and community groups are beginning to pledge to take action for climate and nature. By the end of this article, you’ll see why the collective nature of this action is so important – and how straightforward it is to join them.
Why nature collapse matters here in Henley
In November 2025 the National Emergency Briefing at Westminster Hall took place. Attended by MPs and UK leaders from health, defence, economics and food systems, the event’s speakers – all leading experts in their fields – made one thing very clear: climate and nature loss are not distant environmental issues. They are systemic risks affecting the foundations of everyday life in the UK – our health, our food, our infrastructure, our economy and national security.
A recent Government report on nature and national security(1) also sounded the alarm bell for nature, stating that global biodiversity loss and weakening ecosystems could affect the UK’s resilience and prosperity. Highlighting the natural systems that quietly support modern life – healthy soil growing our food, pollinators supporting crops, rivers regulating flooding and stable climate patterns keeping supply chains predictable – the report warned that when those systems weaken, the effects ripple outward and start impacting on our lives. Flooding becomes more damaging and insurance costs rise, food prices spike, heatwaves put pressure on health services and economic stability becomes more fragile.
This isn’t abstract. It shows up in household budgets, in local infrastructure, in how secure and prepared a town feels.
Here in Henley we are already seeing signs of a warming climate, with the river rising for more prolonged periods in winter, increasing rainfall and summer droughts becoming more common. Food prices are creeping up and extreme weather disrupts schools, travel and daily life. These shifts remind us that the global story is also a local one, shaping the future we leave for the next generation.
Turning concern into measurable action
The scale of this challenge can feel overwhelming. But research shows something positive and hopeful: when people are given clear, manageable actions, participation rises quickly.
That’s why Greener Henley created Pledge for the Planet – a simple platform that turns concern into practical, visible action.
Our pledges offer a wide variety of simple, do-able, inspiring actions, enabling you to pick something that fits well into your life – and registering your pledge takes less than a minute.

Owners of local Henley gym ADVHQ, Rose and Adam Lubbock, have adopted the “Eat Plant Rich” and “Walk it / Bike it!” Pledges and will promote these to the gym’s 250 members, in relation to the former via a Meat-Free Monday.
A pledge is not about changing everything overnight. It’s simply one step – choosing one action you feel ready to take.
People across Henley are pledging to:
- Walk or bike short journeys
- Eat more plant-rich meals
- Make gardens wildlife-friendly
- Prepare homes and businesses to be flood-ready
- Improve energy efficiency
Many people are already taking action quietly, but pledging makes that action visible. As more residents, businesses, schools and organisations join, something powerful happens: it shows that action is normal and achievable, and sends a clear signal that this community cares about protecting what we love – our families, homes and town, the nature surrounding us, and the young generation growing up in Henley.
The visibility of the pledges taken inspires others to join in – this is not just about taking actions, but about letting others know you are doing so. This collective, measurable action creates a ripple effect – suddenly you are part of something bigger, a movement growing into the hundreds and then the thousands, demonstrating to decision-makers that our community wants, and supports, change.

Local momentum is building
This is not just about individual action, we need EVERYONE involved. And across Henley, local leaders and organisations are already stepping up and speaking out, taking pledges and sharing them with their networks.
Hobbs of Henley has taken our “Be Flood-Ready” pledge. Olympic gold medalist Greg Searle has taken our “Walk it / Bike it” pledge. Henley Literary Festival has taken our “Spread the Word” pledge. There are many more who are joining them, with new pledges being added all the time.
When trusted figures act visibly in this way, it sends a clear signal: this is responsible, constructive and mainstream.
And when people see others getting involved, participation feels normal.
This is how momentum builds.
Thousands of us together
We now need thousands more to step forward. Imagine if every school community, sports club, workplace and neighbourhood network had people taking one pledge.
- Hundreds of wildlife-friendly gardens
- Thousands of short journeys walked
- Households and businesses prepared for flooding
- Homes more energy efficient
When thousands of residents act together, it strengthens the case for taking vital policy decisions to restore and boost biodiversity in our hugely nature-depleted country, to help us to cut pollution in all its forms, and to protect our communities from the worst effects of climate impacts.
Numbers matter, visibility matters. When we speak together in our thousands – and when that commitment is measurable – we speak with a powerful voice.
Henley has the networks, leadership and community spirit to model something positive and powerful.
By doing this together, collectively, Henley can become an exemplar town – demonstrating what resilient, community-led climate and nature action looks like.
We can be the town that leads.
The invitation
Take one Pledge for the Planet . Because when action is visible, it spreads.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about protecting what we love – our families, community and homes, our businesses, and the young generation growing up here. It’s about finding better ways of doing things and making them normal, reaching a tipping point where these ‘new normals’ are widely adopted by the majority. This is the change we need.
Henley is already stepping up. Be part of the change.
