Remembering Richard Fortey

We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Professor Richard Fortey on 7th March. His pioneering work and deep passion for nature have left an indelible mark on us all and his legacy will continue to inspire our efforts as we strive to protect and celebrate the natural world.

Greener Henley was very fortunate to have Richard as a friend and a supporter.  His love and understanding of the natural world and his willingness to share his knowledge, captivated audiences of all ages. Richard had a terrific depth of knowledge and a keen sense of humour, which anyone who has read any of his very readable books will know.

Professor Fortey’s Fabulous Fungi Roadshow appeared at two of our Great Big Green Fairs and was very popular. Last year we held a Nature Discovery Day on Mill Meadows and Richard and Jackie helped us assemble a great selection of entomologists to help with identification.

Being something of a polymath Richard also wrote poetry, and last year in  Great Big Green Week he entered the Poetry Competition and came first in the David Grubb Memorial Prize.

Greener Henley will miss his sage words and generous nature.
