Pause On Plastic

Protect nature and your health

Plastic is everywhere, but much of it is used only once before being thrown away. While recycling has an important role to play, the UK still burns, exports or buries large amounts of plastic waste – The Big Plastic Count 2026 found that 59% of household plastic waste is burned in the UK, while only 16% is recycled. Producing less plastic in the first place is one of the most effective ways to tackle the problem.

It would also mean fewer microplastics entering our environment and food chain. Scientists are finding microplastics throughout the natural world – and increasingly within our own bodies too. They have now been detected in human blood, brain tissue and even the placenta, and while research into the long-term effects is still ongoing, the findings are raising serious questions about what this means for our health. Avoiding plastic is one of the most straightforward ways each of us can reduce our exposure.

For individuals, that might mean choosing loose fruit and veg, carrying a reusable bottle, or shopping at refill stores where possible. For businesses, organisations and events, it could mean reducing single-use plastics, offering refill options, or introducing deposit-return schemes. Every step helps reduce waste, cut pollution and prevent plastic from reaching our rivers and oceans – especially important in a river town like Henley.

Many of the changes needed also depend on government action. Better policies can help reduce unnecessary packaging, expand deposit-return schemes and ensure less plastic is burned or exported. Adding your voice to calls for change is another way to make a difference.
