DESCRIPTION:Wilding: Special preview screening + panel discussion+ Q&A\nRegal Picturehouse – 8-10pm\nWednesday 12th June\nWe are very excited to present a special preview screening of Wilding for Great Big Green Week\, with a live panel discussion plus Q&A at the Regal Cinema on Wednesday 12 June @ 8pm \nBased on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book by the same title\, Wilding tells the story of a young couple\, Isabella and Charlie Tree\, who in the 1980s inherit Knepp\, a failing\, four-hundred-year-old farmed estate. By the end of the 1990s\, facts must be faced: the farm isn’t working\, and they are £1.5m in debt. The land is dying\, the soil reduced to sterile dirt\, with plummeting biodiversity levels. Battling entrenched tradition\, the couple dares to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature\, with an ambitious rewilding project inspired by the thinking of European ecologists like Frans Vera. \nRipping down the fences\, and hoping to renew the growth of mycorrhizal fungi deep in the soil\, they set the land back to the wild and entrust its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe. \nOver time\, the soil replenishes itself – with a little help from some charming pigs – and the miraculous return of rare species like the purple emperor butterfly\, white stork and turtle doves\, who make their homes at Knepp. \nIt is a transformation far in excess of anything anyone could have dreamed of\, captured in intimate detail by five time Emmy Award-winning documentarian David Allen and multi- BAFTA & Emmy Award winning cinematographers Tim Cragg and Simon de Glanville. \n\nWatch the trailer here\n \n \n\n\nThere will be a live panel discussion after the film with time for Q&A. \n\nNatasha (Tash) Somers\, co-founder of Pocket Wilding\, a new charity that helps more urban communities appropriately regenerate pockets of land – no matter how small or big. Professionally Tash works with people on their land\, encouraging them to find a place of peace and connection with it and to help move them into a role of custodian by improving the land’s health and biodiversity.\nSally Rankin\, leader of Greener Henley’s Wildlife Group\, has dedicated over 30 years to protecting and restoring nature in and around Henley. The group focuses on creating a mosaic of habitats for wildlife at various locations\, including Mill and Marsh Meadows\, Valley Road Chalk Bank\, Gillotts Field\, and the Greys Road Embankment.\nStephen Doble\, fourth generation farmer at Shiplake Farm and is passionate about farming in a way that balances food production with caring for the environment. Over 25 acres of the farm is dedicated to encouraging biodiversity\, particularly farmland birds and pollinating insects.\nHilary Glew\, volunteer with the Upper Thames branch of Butterfly Conservation and member of the of the local Wildlife Trust BBOWT and the RSPB. Hilary leads guided walks around local nature reserves and woods to spot butterflies and birds. A classic fable of good versus evil\, David against Goliath and a timely exposé; we follow Lek Chailert\, a tribal Thai woman\, as she struggles to rescue abused elephants from the horrifically cruel but secretive and deceptive Thai tourist industry and give them a life free from cruelty and exploitation. Whilst she is globally renowned within the conservation world\, the odds are all stacked against her as big business\, political corruption\, and a ‘mafia’ of traders and traffickers are ranged against her. Lek continues to be at the forefront of elephant rights causes and has initiated projects in Thailand\, Cambodia\, and Myanmar dedicated to improving the well-being of elephants throughout the region.\nJez Lewis: Documentary Film Director. In 2009 Jez completed his debut feature documentary\, Shed Your Tears And Walk Away which Best UK First Feature at London’s East End Film Festival 2010\, an award intended for fiction. Since then Jez has continued to direct\, produce and executive produce several feature documentaries.\nCo-hosts: Maria Mossman and Mary Morgan. DESCRIPTION:Nature Discovery Day\nMill Meadows – 10-2pm\nSaturday 8th June\nHenley’s Great Big Green Week kicks off on Saturday 8th June with a FREE day of activities for anyone and everyone to enjoy. Join us in exploring Nature on our doorstep at Mill Meadows at our Nature Discovery Day! \nWe have drop-in activities programmed throughout the day for all ages – come and take part in the Guided Wildflower Walk\, Tree Trail\, Butterfly & Moth Safaris\, Bug Hunt\, Pond Dipping and more. Keen gardeners can collect free native wildflower seeds or plants at Greener Henley’s stall and learn about our Nature Squared campaign. You can chat with local conservation groups about how we can protect and restore nature locally – why not do some pond dipping with Chiltern Chalk Streams\, or learn why Dark Skies are so important for wildlife with CPRE. \n** BREAKING NEWS ** – Citizen scientist and clean water activist Dave Wallace will be joining us at Nature Discovery Day to talk about why citizen science is so key in the campaign for clean rivers\, and to talk people through the what and how of his river water testing. \nBat\, toad\, moth & butterfly\, bird\, bug\, tree & wildflower experts will also be on hand to reveal the nature living all around us – from beetles and bats to buttercups. Budding photographers can take part in a wildlife photography session\, and if you want to be amongst the first few members of Henley Bat Group\, come on by! \nAcross the meadow\, visitors can pop into the River & Rowing Museum to see Pollution\, an exhibition of local students’ work\, in response to Greener Henley’s Schools Environmental Science Challenge\, alongside work from the wonderful waterside arts and ecology project\, The Beautiful Blue. Both exhibitions run from 23 May to 17 June. \nThe stalls so far confirmed for Nature Discovery Day include:\n\nGreener Henley – that’s us! Your local climate and nature action group will have displays of our Wildlife Working Group\, Swifts\, sign ups for citizen science surveys and lots of info on how to help nature \nOur Nature Squared Stall will have FREE native plants for pollinators when you sign up to plant 1m2 of native wildflowers!\nHenley Toad Patrol\, who help migrating toads\, frogs and Smooth Newts across the busy A4155 Henley Marlow road\, safely to their spawning ground on the other side every year will be there to chat about amphibians\nThames21\, who work with communities to improve rivers and canals for people and wildlife\, will be on hand to chat about the health of our river.\nUpper Thames Butterfly Conservation Group\, who aim to protect our local butterflies\, moths and their habitats\, will lead the butterfly sweeps\nBerkshire and South Bucks Bat Group work to conserve our local bats and their habitats and are keen to help us get a Bat Group going in Henley.\nCPRE\, the countryside charity\, will be letting people know about their Dark Skies campaign\nThe Wildlife Trusts will be chatting about the river as habitat and doing a children’s picture puzzle\nChalk stream volunteers work to conserve\, enhance and raise awareness of this globally important habitat and will lead the pond dipping sessions\nUK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) will be demonstrating how to record your nature discoveries\, plus how you can help pollinators by getting involved in citizen science\nOxfordshire Badger Group will be there with information on celebrating and protecting our local badgers\nAsk the Experts\, where local naturalists will be on hand to help identify just about everything!\nCome and meet: naturalists Richard & Jackie Fortey; moth expert Andrew Padmore; naturalist & wildlife photographer Linda Seward; wildflower expert Sally Rankin; ornithologist Alan Parfitt; tree expert Andrew Hawkins and spider expert Paul Selden\nHenley Town Council will be letting us know about their plans to boost local biodiversity\nDave Wallace is a citizen scientist and clean water activist and will be talking about why citizen science is so key in the campaign for clean rivers\, as well as demonstrating the what and how of his river water testing\n\nActivities planned for Nature Discovery Day from 10am – 2pm include:\nGuided Wildflower walks by local wildflower expert Sally Rankin\, 2 sessions\nBird spotting – Alan Parfitt\,  + R & R have a Bird Bingo sheet they will be giving out.\nWildlife ID/photography demonstration by Linda Seward\, naturalist\, wildlife photographer.\nSelf-led scavenger hunt – Walk the Wildlife trail around Meadows\nButterfly safaris\nMoth identification from previous night’s moth trap\nPond dipping – we will have 4 sessions\nTree trail – 2 sessions \n\n\nOur Nature Discovery Day is just the start of a week-long series of events for Henley’s Great Big Green Week! It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, our health and provide for local communities. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Henley Regal Picturehouse for a special one-off Green Screen of the award-winning documentary film The Nettle Dress\, followed by a panel discussion with director Dylan Howitt\nGreener Henley’s next Green Screen event at the Regal cinema is on Thursday 8th February at 6:15pm. \nThe Nettle Dress tells the story of textile artist Allan Brown as he spends seven years weaving fabric from nettles foraged locally. At its centre is the Longstone\, a 4000-year-old standing stone. This pillar of granite has stood silent sentinel to everything we have done and continue to do to our planet. \n\nBeautifully shot\, with a richly layered sound design\, the film meditates on the passage of time through its appreciation of nature\, highlighting the subtle changes of the seasons\, but also the need to act in order to battle man-made changes that will forever change our planet. \n\nThis Green Screen collaboration between The Regal Picturehouse and Greener Henley continues in 2023 with this screening followed by a live panel discussion moderated by Sara Kandiah from Greener Henley.  Panel members include local experts Sally Rankin from Greener Henley Wildlife Group and Liz Ware a garden writer\, historian and photographer. \nA Year in a Field will be shown at the Henley Regal Picturehouse on Tuesday 5th December at 8pm.
