A classic fable of good versus evil\, David against Goliath and a timely exposé; we follow Lek Chailert\, a tribal Thai woman\, as she struggles to rescue abused elephants from the horrifically cruel but secretive and deceptive Thai tourist industry and give them a life free from cruelty and exploitation. Whilst she is globally renowned within the conservation world\, the odds are all stacked against her as big business\, political corruption\, and a ‘mafia’ of traders and traffickers are ranged against her. But as the world hurtles into a global pandemic\, Lek cleverly identifies this time of uncertainty and fear as an opportunity to out-manoeuvre her enemies and turn the tables. \nThe film offers a unique perspective into the deep emotional bonds between elephants and the people striving to free them\, shedding light on the need for conservation and protection of these majestic creatures. \n\nWatch the trailer here\n \n \n\n\nThe incredible Lek is touring with her film across Picturehouse and will join us for a 45min Q&A discussion after the film!\n\nLek Chailert: Founder of Save Elephant Foundation and Elephant Nature Park\, Lek is a Thai tribal woman and conservationist who rescues elephants from abuse in the Thai tourist industry. Lek continues to be at the forefront of elephant rights causes and has initiated projects in Thailand\, Cambodia\, and Myanmar dedicated to improving the well-being of elephants throughout the region.\nJez Lewis: Documentary Film Director. In 2009 Jez completed his debut feature documentary\, Shed Your Tears And Walk Away which Best UK First Feature at London’s East End Film Festival 2010\, an award intended for fiction. Since then Jez has continued to direct\, produce and executive produce several feature documentaries.\nCo-hosts: Maria Mossman and Mary Morgan. Join us in exploring Nature on our doorstep at Mill Meadows at our Nature Discovery Day! \nWe have drop-in activities programmed throughout the day for all ages – come and take part in the Guided Wildflower Walk\, Tree Trail\, Butterfly & Moth Safaris\, Bug Hunt\, Pond Dipping and more. Keen gardeners can collect free native wildflower seeds or plants at Greener Henley’s stall and learn about our Nature Squared campaign. You can chat with local conservation groups about how we can protect and restore nature locally – why not do some pond dipping with Chiltern Chalk Streams\, or learn why Dark Skies are so important for wildlife with CPRE. \n** BREAKING NEWS ** – Citizen scientist and clean water activist Dave Wallace will be joining us at Nature Discovery Day to talk about why citizen science is so key in the campaign for clean rivers\, and to talk people through the what and how of his river water testing. \nBat\, toad\, moth & butterfly\, bird\, bug\, tree & wildflower experts will also be on hand to reveal the nature living all around us – from beetles and bats to buttercups. Budding photographers can take part in a wildlife photography session\, and if you want to be amongst the first few members of Henley Bat Group\, come on by! \nAcross the meadow\, visitors can pop into the River & Rowing Museum to see Pollution\, an exhibition of local students’ work\, in response to Greener Henley’s Schools Environmental Science Challenge\, alongside work from the wonderful waterside arts and ecology project\, The Beautiful Blue. Both exhibitions run from 23 May to 17 June. \nThe stalls so far confirmed for Nature Discovery Day include:\n\nGreener Henley – that’s us! Some of the work is quite strenuous\, but there are always lighter tasks for those who would prefer them\, for whatever reason. We have a break mid-morning when refreshments are provided: tea\, coffee and cake. Please bring your own gardening gloves. Any gardening gloves will be all right for tasks like pulling Himalayan Balsam but heavier ones will be needed for working with brambles. No previous experience is necessary\, and tools are usually provided. This pillar of granite has stood silent sentinel to everything we have done and continue to do to our planet. \n\nBeautifully shot\, with a richly layered sound design\, the film meditates on the passage of time through its appreciation of nature\, highlighting the subtle changes of the seasons\, but also the need to act in order to battle man-made changes that will forever change our planet. \n\nThis Green Screen collaboration between The Regal Picturehouse and Greener Henley continues in 2023 with this screening followed by a live panel discussion moderated by Sara Kandiah from Greener Henley.  Panel members include local experts Sally Rankin from Greener Henley Wildlife Group and Liz Ware a garden writer\, historian and photographer. \nA Year in a Field will be shown at the Henley Regal Picturehouse on Tuesday 5th December at 8pm. Lex and I will provide as many tools as we can but it would be helpful if some people could bring their own.
