SUMMARY:Fashion Reimagined + Q&A - presented by Greener Henley & Picturehouse Green Screen
DESCRIPTION:As part of Great Big Green Week\, join us at the Henley Regal Picturehouse for our Green Screen collaboration: Fashion Reimagined on Thursday 15 June at 7:00 pm\, followed by a live Q&A session. This informative documentary follows a luxury brand’s painstaking effort to produce clothes that do no harm.\nFashion Reimagined  tells the story of fashion designer Amy Powney of cult label Mother of Pearl\, who embarks on a three-year journey to create a sustainable clothing collection from field to finished garment and transform her entire business. Raised off-the-grid in rural England by activist parents\, Amy has always felt uneasy about the devastating environmental impact of her industry.  When she wins the coveted Vogue award for the Best Young Designer of the Year\, Amy decides to use the prize money to create a sustainable collection and transform her entire business. \nExploring Amy’s journey from fashion world outsider\, to industry leader\, the film examines the complexities and waste of the global supply chain\, whilst Amy’s own personal revolution becomes the precursor of a much bigger societal change. \nWatch the trailer\nhttps://youtu.be/_fmwd8Nf1lc \nAfter the film we’ll be joined by a panel for a Q&A session. Details coming soon..\nDATE – Thursday 15 June\nTIME – 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm\nLOCATION – Regal Picturehouse\, 2 Boroma Way\, Henley-on-Thames\, RG9 2BZ \nBook your tickets here \nThis event promises to be an inspiring screening and conversation on the approaches we can take to adopt ‘slow fashion’\, thereby reducing consumption and production\, lowering our impact on our planet. Come join the discussion! \nPicturehouse Green Screen is an environmental documentary screened in conjunction with a community group\, followed by a panel discussion made up of local experts and then (where possible) an invitation to continue the conversation in the cinema’s bar or cafe to connect and share ideas. Free tea or coffee for those bringing their own keep cups.

SUMMARY:WILDLIFE GROUP Session - MILL/MARSH MEADOWS
DESCRIPTION:Mill/Marsh Meadows \nDate and time: Wednesday 14 June 2023\, 9:30am – 12:30pm \nMeeting place:  The Mill Meadows car park\, just beyond the River & Rowing Museum. I have made arrangements with the Town Council for volunteers to park for free for the duration of the work party \nThings to bring: gardening gloves \nThe tasks for this session will be general maintenance work although we must avoid disturbing nesting birds. As always\, litter picking will be on the agenda for anyone willing to do it. See below for the more general information. Attached please find the risk assessment. \nI hope you will be able to join us at our events in June. If you haven’t already done so\, could I please ask everyone who intends coming to work parties to provide the contact details specified in the table below. Lex has been reviewing our procedures in relation to risk assessments and has found that these details are supposed to be lodged with the Town Council. The procedures state that ‘All information will be kept safe and confidential.’ \nPlease contact Lex or me if you have any queries. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you are attending a session to help ensure we have enough tools\, tea\, coffee and cake. Lex works for the Town Council on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. His work mobile is 07508 427026. \nIf you know anyone else who may be interested\, could you please forward this e-mail to them. If you no longer wish to be reminded about these sessions\, please let me know. \nBest wishes\,\nSally \nMobile: 07941 207687 \n  \nGreener Henley Wildlife Group sessions \nOur sessions are generally pleasant and sociable occasions. Some of the work is quite strenuous\, but there are always lighter tasks for those who would prefer them\, for whatever reason. We have a break mid-morning when refreshments are provided: tea\, coffee and cake. Please bring your own gardening gloves. Any gardening gloves will be all right for tasks like pulling Himalayan Balsam but heavier ones will be needed for working with brambles. No previous experience is necessary\, and tools are usually provided. Tough clothes and stout footwear are recommended. Marsh Meadows is often wet underfoot so waterproof footwear is recommended when we are working there\, particularly if working in the pond area. Volunteers are welcome to join us for the full three hours or any part of them. \nIf you intend coming to work parties and haven’t already provided the information in the table below\, could I please ask you to do so. \n\n\n\nYour Contact Details\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nAddress:\n\n\n\nHome phone:\n\n\n\nMobile:\n\n\n\nEmail:\n\n\n\nSignature: \n  \n \nDate:

We will do our recording on Thursday 8 June\, 9:30 to 12:30.  Please join us if you can. You don’t need to know much about wildlife to come. I will provide assistance with plant identification. For other things we will all be learning together. \nI hope you will be able to join us at our events in June. SUMMARY:Public consultation: how can we boost nature and halve our carbon footprint in Henley? Thurs 18 May 18:30 - 20:30
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the successful public consultation last September on the proposed Climate Emergency Centre (CEC) for Henley\, we are running another one in May\, asking ‘How can we both boost our efforts for nature and halve our carbon footprint by 2030 – and what help do we need from our local councils to do this?’\nAt Greener Henley we feel that it is important to canvass the views of our local community – both in Henley and our surrounding villages – on how we rise to the challenges of the climate and nature emergency that confronts us\, and we will be coming together again on Thursday 18 May 2023 18:30 – 20:30 BST at Henley Town Hall to do just that. \nBook your eventbrite tickets here \nWhat happens at the event\nThe session will begin with a presentation by sustainability and communications expert Ed Hopkins\, who will help us to understand where the biggest areas of impact are in terms of cutting our carbon and ecological footprint. We will also welcome a speaker (tbc) from a nearby town to talk about progress on this in their town\, and to help spark our ideas for Henley. \nAttendees will then move into small groups to consider questions such as \n\nWhat is your vision of a cleaner\, greener Henley by 2030?\nWhat do you think are the main barriers and challenges to reducing emissions and promoting biodiversity in Henley?\nHow can our local councils support and accelerate emissions reduction and promotion of biodiversity in and around Henley?\n\nWe will present the results of the consultation at the Town Hall on Thursday 8th June (a link to that event will be forthcoming soon). The results will provide us with a framework for discussions with our local councils on implementing these ideas. \nWhy a public consultation?\nBig problems can only be solved by big thinking. Bringing a host of different people together in this way to discuss ambitious topics enables free-flowing\, uninhibited blue sky thinking. This process can help to generate the formulation of a clear message to take to our local policy makers about what help we need from them. But the process itself is also valuable in that it starts to spread awareness about these issues\, it pools the best of our knowledge\, and we begin to collaborate more openly and effectively within our community. \nThese public consultations are exactly the sort of event that we will be looking to run on a regular basis as part of our CEC\, which is all about community engagement. These events are a really valuable tool as they give us the opportunity to come together and hear all local voices\, whilst at the same time they fulfil specific objectives that came out of the CEC public consultation: they build community\, provide education and raise awareness. They also provide an opportunity to draft steps forward for change and resilience in our town which can then be taken into discussions with our policy makers. \nWe can’t face the climate and nature challenge alone – working together and combining our skills is critical. If we can do so in a creative space\, unfettered\, where ideas are heard and celebrated\, the solutions we come up with will have community investment and be far more meaningful. \nBook your eventbrite tickets here \nSign up for our newsletter

SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE - The Ice Is Listening by Cecilia McDowall
DESCRIPTION:WORLD PREMIERE – 7.30PM APRIL 1st 2023 \nST MARY’S CHURCH\, HENLEY-ON-THAMES\, RG9 2AU\nCecilia McDowall: The Ice is Listening \nJoin us for the world premiere of The Ice Is Listening by Novello award-winning composer British Cecilia McDowall\, commissioned especially to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Henley Choral Society. \nInspired by Henley’s location on the Thames\, with text created by Oxford-based poet Kate Wakeling\, The Ice is Listening is a cantata about the delicate relationship between water\, ice and humanity and the intricate\, longstanding connections between all three. The work accordingly passes through time and space\, both close and distant\, exploring the uneasy pageantry of the 1683-4 frost fairs on the Thames\, and reflecting on what we stand to lose as the Greenland ice sheet melts. \nThis Gala Concert also includes the Vivaldi Gloria\, one of sacred music’s most uplifting choral works\, and the extraordinarily inventive Bach Mass in G Major. \nWith a star cast of young soloists\, and the talents of the London String Collective\, you are warmly invited to this very special occasion introducing a compelling anthem for our times. \nTickets £20 under 18s £5.00\nPlease book online at\nwww.henleychoralsociety.org.uk

SUMMARY:SAVE OUR WILD ISLES - David Attenborough - Watch on BBC iPlayer
DESCRIPTION:Save our Wild Isles. \nYou may be watching the latest documentary by David Attenborough on BBC TV. This is a five part series showing the wonders and diversity of wildlife in the UK and is the documentary that David Attenborough wanted to make from the very beginning of his career. \nWhat you may not know is that there is a sixth film made by the same production company and David Attenborough\, also with the support of WWF and RSPB who supported the production of the other five. \nThis documentary shows the awkward truths that the BBC did not want to show. In the words of the sponsors “Sounding the alarm for nature\, The UK’s nature is amazing. It’s also our life support system\, but our precious wildlife and wild places are on the brink. SUMMARY:Show the Love 2023 - an evening of crafting and talk
DESCRIPTION:Come and Show the Love with us! Make\, wear and share green hearts to show the love for everything you want to protect from the impacts of climate change. \nTuesday 21st February at 7:30pm in the Kings Arms Barn. \nEach year\, people across the country use the power of green hearts to show decision makers that we want to see urgent action on climate change. Will you join us to Show The Love for our planet this February? \nThis will be a relaxing friendly evening of making and talking to support the Climate Coalition’s campaign Show the Love which runs each February encouraging folk to make and wear a green heart brooch to show their love for the environment. \nLast year we had a great time at our February monthly meeting making paper and felt badges for ourselves and friends out of recycled materials. We also made some extra ones we sent to John Howell for him and his staff to wear\, along with messages telling him that we want to see urgent action to tackle climate change and protect nature. \nThis year it would be great to see more green hearts being worn on Henley lapels.\nTo find out more about the Climate Coalition’s campaign see: https://www.theclimatecoalition.org/show-the-love
