DESCRIPTION:GH WILDLIFE GROUP – Mill/Marsh Meadows \nDate and time: Wednesday 6 November\, 9:30 – 12:30 \nMeeting place: the Mill Meadows car park\, just beyond the River & Rowing Museum\, RG9 1BF\, SU766820\nThe Town Council will allow volunteers to park for free for the duration of the work party \nThings to bring: gardening gloves \n\nThis year the Town Council is giving us more help with cutting and raking up the tall vegetation around the ponds so our tasks for this session will depend on how much they have managed to do. As always\, litter picking will be on the agenda for anyone willing to do it. See below for the more general information. \n  \nGreener Henley Wildlife Group sessions \n\nOur sessions are generally pleasant and sociable occasions. Some of the work is quite strenuous\, but there are always lighter tasks for those who would prefer them\, for whatever reason. SUMMARY:GBGW 2024 - Wilding
DESCRIPTION:Wilding: Special preview screening + panel discussion+ Q&A\nRegal Picturehouse – 8-10pm\nWednesday 12th June\nWe are very excited to present a special preview screening of Wilding for Great Big Green Week\, with a live panel discussion plus Q&A at the Regal Cinema on Wednesday 12 June @ 8pm \nBased on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book by the same title\, Wilding tells the story of a young couple\, Isabella and Charlie Tree\, who in the 1980s inherit Knepp\, a failing\, four-hundred-year-old farmed estate. By the end of the 1990s\, facts must be faced: the farm isn’t working\, and they are £1.5m in debt. The land is dying\, the soil reduced to sterile dirt\, with plummeting biodiversity levels. Battling entrenched tradition\, the couple dares to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature\, with an ambitious rewilding project inspired by the thinking of European ecologists like Frans Vera. \nRipping down the fences\, and hoping to renew the growth of mycorrhizal fungi deep in the soil\, they set the land back to the wild and entrust its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe. \nOver time\, the soil replenishes itself – with a little help from some charming pigs – and the miraculous return of rare species like the purple emperor butterfly\, white stork and turtle doves\, who make their homes at Knepp. \nIt is a transformation far in excess of anything anyone could have dreamed of\, captured in intimate detail by five time Emmy Award-winning documentarian David Allen and multi- BAFTA & Emmy Award winning cinematographers Tim Cragg and Simon de Glanville. \n\nWatch the trailer here\n \n \n\n\nThere will be a live panel discussion after the film with time for Q&A. \n\nNatasha (Tash) Somers\, co-founder of Pocket Wilding\, a new charity that helps more urban communities appropriately regenerate pockets of land – no matter how small or big. Professionally Tash works with people on their land\, encouraging them to find a place of peace and connection with it and to help move them into a role of custodian by improving the land’s health and biodiversity.\nSally Rankin\, leader of Greener Henley’s Wildlife Group\, has dedicated over 30 years to protecting and restoring nature in and around Henley. The group focuses on creating a mosaic of habitats for wildlife at various locations\, including Mill and Marsh Meadows\, Valley Road Chalk Bank\, Gillotts Field\, and the Greys Road Embankment.\nStephen Doble\, fourth generation farmer at Shiplake Farm and is passionate about farming in a way that balances food production with caring for the environment. Over 25 acres of the farm is dedicated to encouraging biodiversity\, particularly farmland birds and pollinating insects.\nHilary Glew\, volunteer with the Upper Thames branch of Butterfly Conservation and member of the of the local Wildlife Trust BBOWT and the RSPB. Hilary leads guided walks around local nature reserves and woods to spot butterflies and birds. Hilarys aim is to see all 62 Butterfly species in the UK and has a few still to see.\n\n\nBook your tickets here:\n\n\nStandard ticket prices apply. \nThere will be an introduction to the film at 8.00pm\, with the film itself running 8.10pm – 9.25pm\, followed by a 45min Q&A. \nThis event promises to be an inspiring screening and conversation on finding a deeper respect for nature and ecosystems and the approaches we can take to change traditional farming practices and reduce pesticide use\, rethinking our interactions with the world around us. Come join the discussion! \nFind out about all the events happening at Henley’s Great Big Green Week 2024 here.

SUMMARY:GBGW 2024 - In Our Hands: Our climate future
DESCRIPTION:In Our Hands: Our climate future – talk with Q&A\nTown Hall Council Chambers – 7-9pm\nMonday 10th June\nWith the “climate crisis” repeatedly in the news over the past year\, how serious is global warming? What happened to Earth’s climate recently\, and what is to come? Why is Net Zero promoted as a solution to global warming? Is Net Zero possible\, or even desirable? What can I do about all this? \nProfessor Christopher Merchant (University of Reading) will address these questions in his talk In Our Hands: Our Climate Future\, followed by ample time for audience questions and answers. The talk will present the key science that makes climate change a formidable challenge\, and will discuss how ingenuity and determination can meet the Net-Zero challenge. Highlighting optimistic examples of progress towards a sustainable climate\, Prof. Merchant will explain the urgency of faster action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the important roles we each have in responding to climate change. \nBook your free tickets here \nFind out about all the events happening at Henley’s Great Big Green Week 2024 here.

SUMMARY:LEANING INTO THE WIND - Green Screen Film
DESCRIPTION:Greener Henley is pleased to be hosting our next Green Screen event Leaning Into The Wind at the Regal Cinema on 17th April @ 8pm.\nLeaning into the Wind is an observation of British artist Andy Goldsworthy at work\, shaping and interacting with nature around the world. It follows Andy on his exploration of the layers of his world and the impact of the years on himself and his art. \nDescribed by the Art Blog as ‘A beautiful film\, it’s an embrace of this intriguing earth artist and his magical interventions.’  Don’t miss it \nBook your tickets here. \nAs Goldsworthy introduces his own body into the work it becomes at the same time even more fragile and personal and also sterner and tougher\, incorporating massive machinery and crews on his bigger projects. Riedelsheimer’s exquisite film illuminates Goldsworthy’s mind as it reveals his art. \nWatch the trailer\n\n \nFollowing the screening there will be a panel discussion with local artists who all take their inspiration from nature and wildlife: James Ort\, a sculptor with a lifelong fascination in wildlife and a former career in conservation; London-born contemporary artist Neo Cartouche who explores themes of nature and identity through interdisciplinary art forms; and Harriet Riddell\, a performance textile artist and educator.\n \n  \nNot been to a Green Screen before?\nCheck out this short video and find out what it’s all about. \n \n‘Green Screen’ is an opportunity to discuss environmental issues raised in the film shown. Everyone is welcome to continue the conversation after the screening in the Regal’s upstairs seating area. All ticket holders can enjoy a free tea or filter coffee if they bring a keep cup! \nBook your tickets for the film screening directly from the Regal or call 020 7326 2649

SUMMARY:Green Screen: Six Inches of Soil
DESCRIPTION:Greener Henley is pleased to be hosting our next Green Screen event Six Inches of Soil at the Regal Cinema on 27th March @ 8pm. This screening is now SOLD OUT! But…\n\nBreaking News!! WE NOW HAVE AN ADDITIONAL SCREENING of Six Inches of Soil @6pm Wednesday 27th March. Please note that the 6pm screening will be just the film only\, no panel\, but there will still be an opportunity to continue the conversation in the bar area afterwards with the film’s producer\, Claire Mackenzie. \nBook your tickets for the 6pm film screening (no panel) here. \nSix Inches of Soil is a British independent full feature documentary shining a spotlight on soil health and regenerative farming. It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, our health and provide for local communities. The film aims to sound the alarm on a broken system\, but to also give hope that there is a way to fix it; to inspire farmers to adopt agroecological and regenerative farming practices; and to encourage consumers\, food corporations and policymakers to support their efforts. \nWatch the trailer here \n \nAfter the film we’ll be joined by the film’s producer\, Claire Mackenzie and a panel of local experts:\n\nIain Tolhurst: Tolhurst Organic – Iain Tolhurst (known to all as Tolly) has been growing organically for over 40 years and stockfree for over 30.  Tolhurst Organic farm is a living example of a thriving farm set in just under 20 acres\, using absolutely no animal inputs and producing a vast array and vegetables and fruits for the local customers.\nMaria Spink: Colstrope Farm\, Hambledon – Originally from Finland\, Maria Spink more recently gave up her work in London to focus on regenerating the landscape around her farm near Hambleden.  Maria now focuses on growing wild flower to bring beautiful butterflies back to our countryside\, alongside rearing Dexter cattle.\nJames Porter: English Farm\, Nuffield\, is the home to 100% grass-fed English Longhorn. Their organic system of rotational and conservational mob grazing allows the animals to behave as close to as nature intended.\nChaired by Joy Skipper – a Registered Nutritionist with a real passion for sustainable\, delicious food. Joy writes food features and cookery books as well as advising clients on the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle.\n\n\n\nThis promises to be an inspiring screening and conversation on our food system and how the choices we make in our daily lives impact the future. Come join the discussion. \nNot been to a Green Screen before?\nWatch this short video and find out what it’s all about. \nBook your tickets for the 6pm film screening (no panel) directly from the Regal or call 020 7326 2649\nPlease note that tickets for the later 8pm screening with panel are now SOLD OUT. \nYou can delve more deeply into the film and the issues raised in it here\n \n  \n  \n\n
