Water feels abundant in the UK – until it isn’t. Droughts are becoming more frequent and severe, and the Thames catchment, which includes Henley, is already one of the most water-stressed areas in the country. Becoming more water-resilient means thinking differently about how we use and value water – not just using less, but finding ways to capture, store and make the most of what falls on our roofs and gardens.
Installing a water butt is a great place to start, as is keeping a jug by the sink to collect ‘grey water’ from cooking or washing up (if using eco-friendly detergents), which can then be reused on plants. Rainwater harvesting systems, drought-tolerant planting, and permeable surfaces that allow water to soak naturally into the ground can all help homes, gardens, businesses and communities become more resilient to dry spells. The more of us who think this way, the better prepared Henley will be when water becomes scarce.
