Save money and energy with simple changes

Every action here can help save money and support the shift to clean energy – some with quick savings, others over the longer term – so just take your pick from the tips and links below. Don’t underestimate the small things either: turning off lights, air drying clothes, switching to LED bulbs, or only running full washing machines and ovens are all simple habits that, added together, can save significant amounts of money and energy over time. Smaller appliances like air fryers, microwaves and slow cookers can often help reduce energy use too.

  • Get a free smart meter and help yourself to lower energy bills in your home or small business
  • Pair your smart meter with the free Energy Saver app for lower home energy bills (on average 8% or over £200 a year)
  • Book a FREE energy assessment for a business, school or community building in Oxfordshire to reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions. The team you deal with can also help direct you towards funding opportunities.
  • Save Energy is a local not-for-profit community-led organisation offering free energy advice to help us lower bills, stay warm and reduce carbon. They also provide chargeable energy assessments and EPCs to help people enjoy a comfortable, more efficient home. Many of their services are free or very low cost, to ensure everyone can benefit.

  • Use energy at the right time. Energy is cheaper at certain times of day on some tariffs – check with your supplier to find out if you could save money by shifting when you use appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher. Try to avoid using appliances at peak times, especially between 4-8pm when the UK’s energy usage is most intense.
