Save money and make space for what matters

Every purchase helps shape the world around us. Choosing thoughtfully is one way to support the people, practices and values we’d like to see thrive. Pausing before making a purchase is one of the simplest ways to spend more intentionally. Whether it’s trying a short cool-down period before buying, or simply asking “do I really need this?”, slowing the buying moment can help us avoid impulse purchases, save money, and reduce clutter at home. Having less stuff to organise and store can also create a calmer, clearer living space – something that can also be good for our wellbeing and peace of mind.

Where it’s possible, choosing better quality items less often can also save money in the long run, as they’re likely to last longer and need replacing less frequently. It’s about valuing what we own and buying more thoughtfully, rather than buying more.

  • Before buying clothes, try asking yourself: will I wear this at least 30 times?
The 30 Wear Challenge is a simple idea that can completely change the way we shop.
  • Could you borrow it instead? Borrowing is a great way to save money and space while avoiding the impact of manufacturing new items. It works especially well for things you only use occasionally – like camping equipment, a jet wash or tools for a one-off project. Ask friends, neighbours or local community groups first, or explore Oxfordshire’s growing network of Library of Things schemes.
